New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen Acquires Team in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's New Golf League
The latest addition to the growing list of high-profile TGL team owners is Steve Cohen, the owner of the New York Mets. Cohen has officially secured rights to a three-man team of PGA Tour players who will represent New York in the tech-infused golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
The Monday-night prime-time series is backed by Woods and McIlroy’s company, TMRW Sports, and is set to begin in January 2024.
Cohen’s acquisition of the New York TGL franchise is the latest of several announcements about team ownership groups in the league. In late August, Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, added a TGL squad to his portfolio of Atlanta sports teams.
The New York TGL property will be managed by Cohen Private Ventures, the businessman’s family office. Cohen, who purchased the Mets in 2022, is the Chairman and CEO of the hedge fund Point72.
“As golf continues to grow in popularity, there’s a demand for enhanced access to the sport and the world’s top players,” Cohen said. “TGL’s primetime schedule will offer an up-close, fast-paced, and innovative take on the sport that will appeal to traditional golf and new fans alike. We’re excited to be a part of TGL and build a team that makes New York proud.”
The complete list of TGL team owners is as follows:
Los Angeles: Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Alexis Ohanian
Boston: Fenway Sports Group
Atlanta: Arthur Blank
New York: Steve Cohen
Although the full TGL roster and designated teams have yet to be determined, a dozen players have already committed to playing in the new league. Woods, McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel will all be a part of the 2024 series. TGL will take place in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., at a venue built specifically for the unique tech-based matches.
