Fore! Things
1. Jon Rahm is back to No. 1 in the world after his victory at the Genesis Invitational. He’s on an amazing run that has seen him win five of his last nine worldwide starts and more than $9 million in prize money in 2023.
2. The victory was the 10th of Rahm’s PGA Tour career and he’s gone 10 straight worldwide starts without finishing out of the top eight.
3. As expected, the Honda Classic field is struggling as it follows two designated events and precedes two more with the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship in the coming weeks. The field’s highest-ranked player is Sungjae Im at No. 18. There are just eight players ranked in the top 50. This is Honda’s last year of sponsorship and the PGA Tour is seeking a replacement to keep the event in Florida.
4. LIV Golf is expected to name its remaining players to fill out rosters on Monday. Thomas Pieters was confirmed over the weekend and will play for Bubba Watson’s Rangegoats team. Others who are expected to join are Brendan Steele, a friend of Phil Mickelson’s who is likely headed to his Hy Flyers team, and Danny Lee.
Fore! More Things
1. When Tiger Woods made an eagle at the par-5 1st hole on Saturday at Riviera, it was his first anywhere since eagling the same hole during the final round of the 2020 Genesis Invitational. His last three eagles have come at the Genesis.
2. Andy Ogletree, who finished last in the first LIV Golf event last year and was not allowed to play in any PGA Tour-sanctioned events the rest of the year, won his second International Series event with a victory on Sunday in Qatar. An exempt player on the Asian Tour due to his victory last year in Egypt, Ogletree now leads the Order of Merit after three events.
3. A couple of interesting teams have emerged for the annual Pro-Member tournament at Seminole Golf Club the day following the Honda Classic. Tony Finau has Tom Brady as a partner and Max Homa will play with Jimmy Dunne, the club president who made it clear no LIV golfers would be invited. Dunne played with Dustin Johnson last year.
4. There are 45 days until the first round of the Masters.
