Robinson Cano hit in head by Angels’ warmup throw, leaves game

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was removed from Saturday‘s game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim after he was struck in the head by an errant Angels warmup throw.

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was removed from Saturday‘s game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim after he was struck in the head by an errant Angels warmup throw.

Before the bottom of the seventh inning, the Angels were warming up on the field when the ball, which appeared to have been overthrown toward the first base side, reached the Mariners’ dugout and struck Cano in the head. Cano was seated against the railing of the Mariners’ dugout.

Cano was “shaky” after the incident and helped into the Mariners’ clubhouse by a trainer and manager Lloyd McClendon. Willie Bloomquist replaced Cano at second base.

The Mariners later said Cano was suffering from dizziness but did not have a concussion. He was diagnosed with a contusion and listed as day-to-day. A sizable welt was evident on the left side of his head.

Before exiting, Cano was 0-for-3 in the game. He is batting .244 with four home runs and 24 RBIs this season, his second with the Mariners.

The Angels led 2–1 before Cano’s exit and scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to build a 4–1 lead.
