Angels Could Add Talent to Shift Narrative From Losing Shohei Ohtani
The Los Angeles Angels have had a fairly quiet offseason so far, but they are far from done. The front office has been looking all over for help across the roster, and they have been linked with a few top-tier names on the open market.
The team wants to be competitive next season and, hopefully, end its long playoff drought. The biggest priority for this team lies with the starting rotation, which had a 4.64 ERA last season even with ace Shohei Ohtani.
No that Ohtani is gone, we could see the Angels add multiple pieces to the staff.
The Athletic's Sam Blum believes that the Angels could look to add big-name talent this offseason if only to shift the narrative away from losing Ohtani to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Owner Arte Moreno knows the fanbase is upset, so landing one big player may help ease morale.
"The Angels are more than one player away from improving on their 73-89 record from each of the past two seasons. But adding one big player could shift the narrative of the offseason, which could be Moreno’s priority."
Per Sam Blum of The Athletic
The Angels have been linked with free-agent starting pitchers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom could help bolster the rotation. Historically, Moreno has reframed from giving out large free-agent contracts to pitchers.
If the Angels add simply to add, they will show they haven't learned anything from the past 10 years. This team has been stuck in mediocrity for years, and needs to make strategic moves to get out of the rut.
How will the Angels find a way to build a roster with an eye toward contention? The answer isn't obvious, which makes this offseason particularly interesting. After losing Ohtani, the pressure really is on the front office to set a new path forward.
