Angels Injury News: Patrick Sandoval Done for the Year, Struggling Reliever Recalled
The Los Angeles Angels have seen some unfortunate injuries occur this season, and as the year winds down, they are just trying to end the season on a good note. They have been eliminated from playoff contention once again, so the games are merely about them playing for pride, and the future.
Unfortunately, the team has suffered another injury with only a few games left to go in the season. Starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval exited Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers with an oblique injury, and was placed on the injured list on Tuesday, ultimately ending his season. Kolton Ingram was recalled in his place.
Sandoval only lasted three innings against the Rangers before having to come out of the game. The Angels decided to play it safe with their left-hander as they enter into the offseason. They don’t want to make this injury any worse than it already is, especially given the uncertain nature that surrounds the organization this offseason.
Sandoval finishes his 2023 with a record of 7-13 and an ERA of 4.11. He also struck out 128 over 144.2 innings of work this season.
He showed some flashes of brilliance this season, including a start in late August against the New York Mets where he went six innings allowing just one run, and strikeout out seven. But he also was susceptible to getting knocked around, which elevated his ERA over the course of the season.
He remains under team control for a few more years, so he will likely be back with the team next season. The Angels seem to like him as well, but the team does need to start trying to get back into contention going forward.
As for Ingram, he has a 10.38 ERA in four MLB appearances this season, and will hope to be better as the season winds down.
