As we enter the first few days of July, the Los Angeles Angels find themselves in a bit of an unfamiliar spot. Currently, the team is in the thick of the playoff race for the first time in a while and it has been a long time coming. Having two of the game's best superstars on the roster normally means on-field success but the Angels haven't seen the postseason since 2014.

Within the new power rankings for baseball that just came out, it seems as those who cover the game are a bit split on the Angels. Within the MLB.com rankings, the Angels are ranked at number 15 which is down four spots from the previous version of the rankings. And within the power rankings from The Athletic, Los Angeles is located at number 12 which is one spot higher than they were last time.

The Angels have the feel of that middle of the pack team that could land either way of the spectrum depending on the day. They have a talented roster but injuries and inconsistency just seem to keep getting in the way.

As we get further and further into July, the Angels will need to figure out what direction they want to go in. Do they be aggressive at the trade deadline and gear up for a postseason run? Or will they stand pat and hope for the best?

The decision may have been made for them on Tuesday as they got some bad news regarding star Mike Trout. Trout suffered a fracture in his left hamate and will now be sidelined for multiple weeks. This is a massive blow to this team and while there is a possibility that they can survive without his services, the Angels may want to be cautious.

They do have the impending free agency of Shohei Ohtani on the horizon so it'll be interesting to see exactly how the franchise plays everything. They aren't that far away from contending but they also have been struggling a bit lately. What they do this deadline could severely impact what happens this winter.
