Angels News: Halos GM Isn't Worried About His Bullpens Early Season Woes
If MLB games were to end after just four and five innings, the Los Angeles Angels' season would look a lot different now. All jokes aside, the fact of the matter is that this isn't the case and LA has been relying too heavily on their starting pitching staff to get them ahead big during the beginning of matches.
That has not been a recipe for success so far as the Angels have seen multiple leads shrink the moment that relievers step in. Most recently, LA fell to the Washington Nationals 6-4 and the struggles were very clear.
We have seen the likes of Jimmy Herget, Matt Moore, and others give up multiple hits to opposing sides. However, Angels GM Perry Minasian does not believe any of this is a reason for panic as he withholds plenty of trust in the bullpen that he has played a big role in constructing.
“We like our bullpen,” Minasian said on Monday. “I think when you look at certain things that are indicators of good bullpens, missing bats is important, not walking people is important. We’ve done both to a pretty solid level. The one area where we’ve been really hurt, it’s just batting average on balls and play." (Via The Orange-County Register)
Not giving up walks is great, don't me wrong. It does not allow teams to get easy players on base with virtually no effort but the bullpen must do a better job of not causing errors and giving up hits.
A total of 14 were allowed against a struggling Nationals team that has dropped seven games in 2023. If the Halos do not want to join them there, these problems must be addressed.
