Facing an 0-1 count in the eighth inning and a 9-3 deficit, Mike Trout hit a foul ball off the first baseline. Immediately, he cradled his left wrist and left the game in the middle of the at-bat. Mickey Moniak took his place, striking out.

Obviously, Trout's potential injury has much bigger ramifications than a July loss to the San Diego Padres. Trout, who has been improving after a relatively slow start to the season, is a key part of the Angels' attempt to make their first playoffs since 2014.

After undergoing tests postgame, Trout spoke on his reaction to the injury.

"I'm just praying the results come back clean," Trout said. "It doesn't feel great. Hopefully, it's just a sprained wrist."

A wrist injury for a hitter is about as bad as it can get, and the difference between a sprain and something much, much worse could mean several weeks spent on the IL.

"Just really uncomfortable," Trout said, explaining how his wrist felt. "I can't really describe it. I never felt it before, ever. I never had wrist problems or anything. Just a freak thing."

Trout, who is batting .263/.369/.493, had two hits and a walk in the Angels' 10-3 loss to the Padres before exiting the game in the eighth inning. The Angels take on the Padres again Tuesday night, and it would be optimistic to assume that Trout will take the field so soon.

If Trout is indeed out tonight, outfielder prospect Jo Adell will likely step into the lineup in his place. Adell made headlines when he crushed a home run in his first at-bat of the 2023 season in early June.

The Angels will finish their series against the Padres on Wednesday, with a two-game series against the Dodgers to finish the first half of the season.
