Anthony Rendon, who has played 43 of the 97 possible games in the 2023 season, is eligible to return from the injured list Friday. The Angels' third basemen has been recovering from a bruised shin suffered July 4, and will likely not be active for Friday's game against the Pirates.

Rendon was struggling before the injury, going 4-for-47 over his last 14 games. Manager Phil Nevin is optimistic that Rendon is not far from returning to the diamond.

"I think he's gonna come in one day and say 'I think I can go tomorrow,' and then we'll see how it goes," Nevin said. "He comes in and says 'Yep, today's the day.' It's all pain tolerance right now."

On the season, Rendon is batting .236 with a .678 OPS and just 2 home runs. In his sted, Michael Cabbage and Michael Stefanic have been called up from the minors.

Cabbage made his Major League Baseball debut Jul. 14 against the Houston Astros and has since played fairly well at the plate

Stefanic, who debuted last season but is still considered a rookie, was the hero earlier this week with a walk-off against the Yankees in the 10th inning on Monday.

Rendon is no stranger to the injured list, hitting the 10-day IL after a left groin strain in May and missing time in June with a bruised wrist. The 33-year-old is currently in the fourth year of a 7-year, $245 million contract.
