It’s been another frustrating season for the Los Angeles Angels, and one that will see them miss the playoffs again. The long postseason drought continues, and they will enter the offseason with more questions than answers.

One of those questions will be how to help starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval improve from a poor season. Sandoval showed some flashes of what he could do, but never put it fully together. It cost him on the mound, and now he enters into the offseason with more work to do.

“Definitely a big learning year for me,” Sandoval said. “Just navigating the ups and downs of this game. A lot of downs this year and personally and as a team, we didn’t really accomplish what we set out to accomplish.”

Per The LA Times

Sandoval finished his season with an ERA of 4.11 and a record of 7-13. He also posted a 1.51 WHIP and struck out 128 batters over 144.2 innings pitched.

It was a very inconsistent year for the veteran pitcher and one that he wants to improve on next year. He can enter the offseason with a plan to take what worked and continue focusing on that.

The Angels are going to need him to step up next season and be the pitcher that he has shown to be at times. He has the skillset, but his problem is consistency and until he fixes that, he won’t live up to his potential.

“It’s just tough,” Sandoval said. “It’s been inconsistent all year. And that’s the biggest thing for me, is trying to find something that’s consistent and works for me.”

The hope is that Sandoval can learn from the mistakes of this season, and move forward past them. It will be a big offseason for him to show that he has what it takes to make it in this league consistently.
