Angels News: Perry Minasian Looking to Continue to Upgrade Roster This Offseason
The Angels roster is almost finalized entering Spring Training. However, there are still a few places the team could look to upgrade over the next few weeks.
The team still lacks a sixth starting pitcher, and doesn't have a true closer, although new RHP Carlos Estevez would love to get first crack at that role.
On the offensive side, the Angels still don't have a true everyday shortstop, and could look to upgrade the catcher position.
There's a chance they don't add anyone before Opening Day, but it seems likely they make at least one more move. And when GM Perry Minasian spoke to the media over the weekend, he made it sound like something is going to happen.
"We’ll continue to examine the bullpen, the rotation," Minasian said. "Even enhancing our position player group is not out of the realm of possibility. We’re still having conversations, dialogue. We’ll see where it goes."
Last week, MLB insider Jon Heyman said the Angels were in touch with at least five free agents on the market. They're clearly making some calls, looking to upgrade some positions ahead of next season.
If I had to guess, I think the Angels for sure add a starting pitcher before next season. They've been heavily linked to RHP Michael Wacha, and if his desired contract price continues to drop, I think he would be a perfect fit in the Angels rotation. He'd slide in at the No. 4 spot, as one of two right-handers in the lefty-heavy rotation, and bring a ton of experience and depth in the rotation.
I also think they should add a catcher, but I don't see that move coming to fruition.
