Angels News: Phil Nevin Reveals Latest Update Regarding Shohei Ohtani Injury
With only a little under a month left to go in the season, the Los Angeles Angels are just trying to do their best to finish the year on a high note. It has been a very frustrating season for them, and now they are faced with the impending free agency of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.
The Angels find themselves essentially out of the playoff picture at this point, so they can start looking to the future. That future potentially involves not having Ohtani any longer, something that seems more like a nightmare for those involved.
He has been shut down for the year as a pitcher while dealing with a torn UCL but did decide to keep going as a hitter. Yet, he has been dealing with an oblique injury of late that has sidelined him for the last few games.
Manager Phil Nevin provided an update on the superstar after the team’s loss Tuesday night to the Baltimore Orioles.
“We’ll see how is tomorrow when he comes in,” Nevin said. “We’ll have a conversation. But I think we dodged a bullet there as far as injury goes. It’s more of like a day-to-day thing.”

The Angels made the decision to hold Ohtani out, which seems like a smart choice considering all the factors. The team isn’t going to make the playoffs this season, so why allow him to continue to play.
Ohtani may be the ultimate competitor, but this is them saving him from himself. It’s also something that they should have done throughout the season.
“He really wants to play right now,” said Nevin, whose team is 11 games below .500 and no longer in contention for a playoff berth. “This is something that he’s upset by. He wants to play. And we want him to. Of course, we do. It’s a credit to who he is. If you start something you’re gonna finish it. He wants to be out there. I know he does. But right now, we’re still evaluating, to see where we’re at. Those things can be finicky at times. So we’ve got to make sure. That’s why we’re diving into some tests. When we get all that information, you guys will know.”

It remains to be seen if Ohtani will return to the lineup soon, but it sounds like he avoided a major injury here. As he is already dealing with the UCL tear, he is better off shutting down for the rest of the year.
His Angels career may be over, but he will give himself extra time to heal or even get the needed surgery to repair the UCL tear. It’s a tough reality for both sides, but one that really needs to happen at this point.
