Before any analyst, expert, or even coach could do, Shohei Ohtani was the first to take responsibility for the Angels' Friday loss and pinpoint what he must do better moving forward. After starting off the 2023 season so strong, he has slowly been watching his ERA rise and failed to help LA tie the Astros in their current series.

Houston was able to connect on nine hits and five runs against Ohtani with two of those being homers. Whenever you hear the number nine associated with the 28-year-old superstar in the same sentence, it is usually because of his strikeouts. But he only recorded six en route to a 6-2 loss.

It did not help at all that even though the Halos were able to record nine hits and get their guys on base, very few were actually brought home. For the second time this season, the Angels are not showing up against one of their biggest division rivals.

But like I said, The Unicorn always addresses where he went wrong and last night was no different.

“It just comes down to pitch selection and execution, which I wasn’t able to do,” Ohtani said in Japanese through an interpreter. “If I was able to get those strikeouts, I think the momentum would have swung our way. That wasn’t the case.”

He also touched on how he and the rest of the batters failed to bring their runners in.

“I feel like we’re getting a lot of guys on, just missing that one big hit,” Ohtani said. “We had a couple situations with runners on and couldn’t come through. We have to come through with those big hits with runners on base.”

The Halos still have the opportunity to tie up the series but it would require two straight wins these next two days. Let's see if they can take care of business!
