Angels News: Writer Thinks Jo Adell is ‘Even More Lost’ This Spring
It's been a long road since Jo Adell was a clear-cut top prospect prior to the 2020 season. Following a handful of successful seasons in the minor leagues that saw him record a.896 OPS, the 23-year-old hasn't quite been able to bring that same firepower when throwing on an Angels uniform.
In his first season with LA, his OPS immediately dropped almost 50% to .478. He improved to around .700 the next season but still struggled to remain consistent at the plate and didn't blow any coaches away with his outfield play. Aware of his failure to meet expectations thus far into his career, Adell revealed his plan for Spring Training to get back on track and also confirmed that he believes he'll make the final roster.
However, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report is not a believer. In his most recent "Buy Or Sell" article, he pinpoints Adell's performances in training camp so far as a red flag for the Angels' front office.
"Adell is looking no closer to realizing the immense hype that accompanied him when he was MLB.com's No. 6 prospect going into 2020," said Rymer. "It's alarming that he's struck out 12 times in 24 plate appearances, and that much more so in context of how he's done so against pitchers who account for a pedestrian 7.3 Opponent Quality score."
Rymer did acknowledge that Adell came into Spring Training with a chip on his shoulder and noted his physical shape as "the best of his life", but numbers do not lie. If Adell does not pick up production, LA's front office may agree with Rymer and keep him down in the minor leagues.
