Angels Reportedly Continue to Be Favorite For Blake Snell, Despite Hesitation From Arte Moreno
Angels owner Arte Moreno has been under fire for some time with the fanbase, consistently being criticized for the moves he makes. He can be an impulsive person at times and it has come back to bite him, especially regarding large free-agent contracts.
This offseason, he has been able to hold off on allowing the front office to sign any major free agents, despite the team being heavily linked to some. The biggest name connected with the Angels this winter has been starting pitcher Blake Snell, who remains unsigned into the middle of March.
Snell is coming off winning the National League Cy Young Award with the San Diego Padres and it has been reported that his preference is to land with the Halos. It seems that the Angels are the favorite for his services, despite hesitation from Moreno to sign off.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale has the latest reporting on the Snell front.
"The Los Angeles Angels continue to be the favorite to land free-agent starter Blake Snell, who’s willing to sign a short-term contract with opt outs. Angels owner Arte Moreno has yet to sign off on a big free-agent purchase after being burned in past years."
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today
Signing Snell may be a risky move for the Angels, but one that the team should make. If he is indeed willing to sign a short-term deal with opt-outs, Moreno should run to the table to make it happen.
Snell would give the Angels an ace-level starter at the top of the rotation, which is something they are lacking right now. He is worth the gamble and Moreno would earn some brownie points with a fanbase who isn't too fond of him at the moment.
