The Angels enter the offseason searching for another manager after a disappointing year saw them let go of Phil Nevin. The Halos want to take their time in the search, but they also understand that getting someone sooner rather than later could help things in free agency.

Writer Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times put together a list of potential candidates for the Halos, and that included former Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss. Weiss has spent time with the Atlanta Braves lately and could be an interesting option for the Angels.

“The bench coach of the Atlanta Braves has entertained teams’ interest in the past but would not leave unless it was for something compelling. “I love where I’m at,” Weiss told The Times in 2022, “and it would have to be a good situation to take me away from that.” Weiss previously managed the Colorado Rockies from 2013 to 2016. He has worked with Minasian and his brother Calvin Minasian with the Braves. If there was interest, the Angels would need permission from the Braves to interview Weiss.”

Weiss has experience, which could interest the Angels. But his managerial record is nothing to behold, as he never had a winning season. The most amount of wins that he led the Rockies to was 75, so the Halos may look for someone with more success on their resume.

The Angels themselves haven’t put together a winning season in a while, and they can’t afford to mess up this hire. Whoever they bring in will already be the fifth manager since 2018, so the turnover rate has been very high for them.

It seems that the Halos want to field a winning team next season, so a more veteran manager does make sense. But the team may struggle to find anyone willing to take the job, because of the lack of production this franchise has seen over the years.

It also doesn’t help that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani could be walking out the door this winter as well. The team could be heading into a state of transition, so they will need to be careful with who they hire this winter.
