Hunter Renfroe has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds after a slow start with the team, they announced on Monday.

Renfroe was one of the many Angel players that were waived at the end of August to get the Halos under the luxury tax limit and give these still valuable players possible chances to play in the postseason.

Renfroe was claimed by the Reds in the ensuing waiver claims joining Harrison Bader as two outfield additions by the Reds' young team led by players like Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz.

Renfroe's time with the Reds is over now and in 14 games he only hit a .128 average with a .432 OPS, hitting 1 home run while striking out in 12 of his 39 at-bats.

Renfroe has never been a high batting average player — his highest season mark being .259 with the Red Sox in 2021 — but always made up for it with power numbers and plus defense in the corner outfield.

The Cincinnati Reds have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games but are now only a 0.5 game behind the last National League Wild Card Spot being held by the Marlins and Cubs, who both have a 78-72 record.

The Reds will now look to replace Renfroe with a possibly more reliable bat or a younger piece that may have more of a future with the organization.

For Renfroe, he now goes on waivers and if unclaimed, he will be a free agent and be able to talk to any team that would like to offer him a contract.

Renfroe is still 31 and is able to go on hot streaks while still providing plus defense in the outfield. A playoff hopeful team may still take a waiver on him or he may just sit in free agency the rest of the year.
