We are only a few weeks away from the real start of free agency in baseball, and that means Shohei Ohtani watch will be in full swing. It will be unlike any free agency that we have ever seen, and the entire baseball world will be watching closely.

Throughout his career with the Angels, the team has made life as easy as possible for Ohtani. They have allowed him to go about things as he pleases, something that has made him very comfortable over the years.

This includes media availability and different aspects of dealing with the media. He has been sheltered in a way, in part due to the team that he plays for. While the Angels do play in Southern California, the team doesn’t have the same type of pressure to win as other organizations.

One insider believes that this could end up playing a role in his free agency this winter, especially when it comes to him considering certain teams on the East Coast.

If Ohtani were to choose to head to the New York Mets or New York Yankees, his life would change completely. The media in New York is unlike anything we have in the United States, and Ohtani would find that out very quickly.

Since he has shied away from things over the years, it remains to be seen if he would want to deal with that. He couldn’t just duck the media any longer, so it will be a factor in his decision.

Ohtani just wants to win, and he can likely do that with other teams than New York. The Mets can afford any amount of money that he wants, but there is no price on comfort.

While Ohtani still is likely to leave the Halos this winter, the Angels likely will be given some consideration. But their inability to field a winning team over his time there is what will ultimately doom them in the attempt to retain him this offseason.
