Astros OF Clears Waivers, Returns to Triple-A Sugar Land

Bligh Madris was the player the Houston Astros released to make room for Jon Singleton earlier this week.

Houston Astros outfielder Bligh Madris has cleared waivers and will re-join Triple-A Sugar Land, per the Houston Chronicle.

The Astros designated him for assignment earlier this week to make room for Jon Singleton on the 26-man roster. Every MLB team was given the chance to claim Madris off waivers.

The Astros called up Madris up in late June after Yordan Alvarez was injured. In 12 games with the Astros he slashed .154/.267/.192/.459. He drew four walks and struck out seven times in 30 plate appearances.

The Astros DFA’ed the 27-year-old before Opening Day and he cleared waivers then, which allowed him to return to Sugar Land. With the Space Cowboys he’s slashed .243/.357/.442/.799 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI.

The Astros had no experience with Madris when they acquired him in the offseason. The Astros traded cash to the Detroit Tigers to acquire him.

Before that, he was in the Pittsburgh organization, where he signed in 2017 as an international free agent. He worked his way through that organization before a call-up last season, where he played in 39 games and batted .177.

After that, Madris was with four teams in five months. The Pirates designated him for assignment. The Tampa Bay Rays picked him up in September, only to DFA him in November. The Tigers picked him up in November, only to DFA him and then trade him to the Astros.
