Houston Astros Targeting Another Bat Ahead of Trade Deadline
The Houston Astros eventually pulled off their blockbuster trade to acquire Justin Verlander from the New York Mets before the trade deadline.
It was long rumored that Verlander and the Astros were interested in a reunion, despite the rumblings they were no longer targeting a starter amidst, the high asking price from the Mets.
With pitching upgrades being checked off the wish list, it doesn't seem like Houston is satisfied.
The front office is reportedly now in the market looking for another bat to add to their lineup.
With the return of Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve to the roster, their offense should naturally take a big step forward. However, the Astros are still looking get more hitting on the roster to help their playoff push.
Another potential reunion could come with Trey Mancini.
He was just designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs, who he signed a 2-year deal with in the offseason.
Mancini was a member of the World Series team last season after getting acquired at the deadline. Now, it wouldn't cost Houston a high price to bring him back without having to trade assets.
Last season, the right handed slugger hit .176/.258/.364 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in 51 games with the Astros.
Mancini could help add some pop to the lineup that is below last year's numbers in slugging percentage. While he may not be a flashy pick up at the deadline, he could add some depth for a team that has struggled with injuries throughout the season.
