Gerrit Cole Makes Admission About Houston Astros Defeat in ALCS

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole opens up about losing to the Houston Astros in the 2022 American League Championship Series.

The Houston Astros have been the New York Yankees kryptonite in recent years. The Astros have ended the Yankees hopes of returning to and ultimately winning a World Series.

Such was the case last season when the Astros swept the Yankees in four games.

New York ace Gerrit Cole sat down with the New York Post in a recent interview and described that series loss, the rivalry between the two teams and if there is a psychological edge Houston holds over the Yankees.

"It was easy to accept: We got beat. We got beat every game, and the numbers obviously back that up," said Cole. "I’m not sure I sense the psychological variable that you’re talking about. I’ve obviously been on both sides of this rivalry, I guess you would say, or of this competition between the two, and there are a lot of similar mindsets on both clubs, really. It just comes down to putting up when you need to put up. And so we haven’t done that yet.

"We fully expect the Astros probably to be in the championship series, they’re a great club with great pedigree, numbers in history would suggest all those types of things and numbers would suggest that the path to the World Series at some point probably runs through or around Houston. We’re gonna have to play our best ball to beat a club of that caliber, and even if it’s not Houston in the championship series, if it’s another team, the situation’s gonna be the same: We’re gonna have to play our best baseball to get past that team, because that team is gonna be extremely competitive and elite."

As it stands, the Astros and Yankees may very well meet again in the postseason this year. Houston, in it's current state, probably gives the edge to the Yankees.

But when the games matter in October and the Astros are healthy, it could once again be riveting television viewing.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole assuredly wants another crack at taking down the Astros en route to a World Series appearance.
