The Houston Astros are trying to extend some of their key and core players. Names such as Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, and Framber Valdez are all on the docket following the extension of pitcher Cristian Javier.

In the case of Tucker and Valdez, the franchise is in active negotiations with their agents, but only for the next 24-48 hours. Then the talks will be shelved until a later date to prevent distraction.

In Tucker's case, the right fielder is seeking a long-term deal. It's a deal that would take him past his age-33 season. That is a prospect Astros General Manager Dana Brown does not like according to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle.

“I think Jim is willing to (go) further, I just don’t know that I have the comfort of going as long as, say, maybe I’ll have to to get Tucker done,” Brown said. “I just don’t like big deals. If they’re open for something a little more than five, maybe I would be open to doing that. I’m sure Jim would be, too. I think Jim is very open. But doing 10-year deals, I don’t know if we’ll ever get to that point. That’s a lot of years, man. I’m not comfortable doing 10. I don’t mind doing 10 if you get a guy to the big leagues in the early 20s, really feel like he’s a big piece of the franchise, face of the franchise, and get him done for 10 and he finishes it out at 32-33. I’m OK with that,” Brown continued. “These deals that go beyond 33, for me, I’m uncomfortable. The analytics on that is not good.”

It sounds like Tucker is pursuing a "megadeal" which has become the all too popular norm with contracts in recent years. The right fielder is the type of player that could command such a deal, but that clearly doesn't align with the way Brown tries to structure his contracts.

It'll be interesting to see if the team and Tucker in particular can come to some sort of agreement or if Tucker will be destined for free agency following the 2025 MLB season.
