Player Review: Sean Murphy
Sean Murphy's stats
MLB Stats: .251/.365/.843 with 21 doubles, 21 homers, and 68 RBI
Grading Sean Murphy's 2023 season
Catching: A+
Sean Murphy has been one of the best catchers in the MLB for multiple years now and he proved why once again behind the plate for the Braves this year. Good luck stealing bases on Murphy, as he caught 15 players trying to steal this year. It was a lot harder to catch players stealing with the new bases and base running rules that were implemented, but Murphy still held his own.
"He is no worse than sixth in pop time, framing runs and blocks above average. Overall, his fielding run value of plus-12 runs is tied for third among all players (min. 100 innings played)." - MLB.com
Hitting: B-
Prior to the All-Star break, Sean Murphy was one of the best hitters in baseball. He had a .306 batting average with 17 doubles, 17 homers, and 55 RBI. Those stats led to him being selected to his first All-Star game.
After the All-Star break, Murphy looked like he had never seen a baseball most of the time. He had a .159 batting average and only a .111 batting average in September. With D'Arnaud getting more playing time, Murphy saw his usage rate go down and he was unable to get into a rhythm.
Sean Murphy's contract status
Sean Murphy signed a 6-year, $73M contract with the Braves in 2023. That contract is back-loaded, meaning he will make more money towards the end of that deal. Murphy made only $4M in 2023 and he is set to make $9M in 2024.
