Has Spencer Strider locked down the National League Cy Young Award?
Spencer Strider is having a historic season.
15-4 on the season with a 3.46 ERA in his 26 starts, Strider leads all of baseball in wins (15), total strikeouts (236), strikeout rate (13.9 K/9), and Fielding Independent Pitching (2.80). His WHIP of 1.057 - Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched - is the best in the National League and is 6th best in baseball, behind 3/5ths of Seattle's rotation and Tampa Bay Rays starter Zach Eflin.
But is he still the favorite for Cy Young?
Not as of Tuesday morning. Per FanDuel, it's a three-man race and Strider's coming in second at the moment.
-130: Blake Snell, Padres
Blake Snell is the betting favorite for NL Cy Young, coming in at -130. He's 11-9 this season with a 2.60 ERA in his 27 starts for the San Diego Padres. Snell's struck out 193 batters in his 149.0 innings, good for a 11.7 K/9 mark, and his 2.60 ERA is the lowest in MLB this season. Snell's 6.2 H/9 is the best mark in the National League.
(He also leads all of baseball in walks, with 85, and wild pitches, with 12).
+200: Spencer Strider, Braves
Nope, Spencer Strider's second in the odds for Cy Young, at +200. With the 3rd best winning percentage in baseball (.789) and a gap of more than 2.1 K/9 between him and the next closest pitcher (Toronto's Kevin Gausman is striking out 11.704 batters per nine innings), it's easy to make the case that Strider's the most dominant pitcher in baseball, but that doesn't automatically make you the Cy Young favorite.
+410: Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks
Arizona's ace, Gallen is 14-6 with a 3.32 ERA in his league-leading 28 starts this season. Striking out "only" 182 batters in his 173.1 innings (a 9.5 K/9), Gallen's instead dominant thanks to his pinpoint control (only 37 walks, a 1.9 BB/9 mark) and a low home-run rate of exactly 1.0 HR/9.
(Side note - Gallen's twice finished in the top ten of Cy Young voting, including a Top 5 finish last year, and this season was his first All-Star award. Baseball doesn't always make a ton of sense).
Spencer Strider looks to continue to make his Cy Young case with a start later this week against the Los Angeles Dodgers in what MLB.com called the most influential series remaining on the MLB calendar.
