The Atlanta Braves select 3B Sabin Ceballos in the 3rd round of the 2023 MLB Draft

Atlanta takes a good collegiate hitter with some more power projection to come

The Atlanta Braves have taken SS/3B Sabin Ceballos out of the University of Oregon in the 3rd round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Previously drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 14th round of the 2022 Draft, he returned to college and continued to hit well. Offensively, he flashed significantly improved power in 2023 and and has great contact (high) and chase (low) rates. While most of the home run power has been to the pull side, he has all-fields hitting ability.

Defensively, he played shortstop in college but has worked out for teams at both 2nd and 3rd, and played some behind the plate in last summer's MLB Draft league. The arm is above-average, but questions about his speed and range may force him to eventually move to 1B or behind the plate.

Sebin Ceballos MLB Draft Snapshot

Name: Sebin Ceballos

Position: SS (announced as 3B)

School: University of Oregon

Measurables: 6'3, 225 lbs

Stats: .333/.426/.643 w/ 18 HRs, 29 XBH, 34 BB to 36 Ks, 0/1 SBs

Ceballos went from the Puerto Rico high school scene to San Jacinto Junior College. In two years at San Jac, he hit .341 and got a late look from the Angels in Round 14 of the 2022 Draft. He headed to the University of Oregon instead of signing and has continued to hit well, though questions about his defensive profile have tempered excitement about his bat to a degree. Most believe Ceballos can hit some, as he's shown the ability to make a lot of contact for three years running. What has his proponents more excited is that his plate discipline has improved and he's shown more ability to drive the ball the other way. He doesn't miss many fastballs and his power has started to show up more as his approach has gotten better, especially to the pull side. (MLB.com)
