BREAKING: Kyle Wright leaves Miami start with injury in the 3rd inning
Atlanta Braves starter Kyle Wright, last year's MLB wins leader with 21, left tonight's game in the 3rd inning with a trainer.
Here's the video.
The righthander had a slow start to spring training after getting a cortisone injection in January for a slow shoulder. Starting the season on the disabled list, he made some minor league rehab starts before being activated and entered tonight's game with a 4.86 ERA after four starts, pitching only 16.2 innings on the season with 17 strikeouts to an uncharacteristic 9 walks.
Wright's fastball, which opened the game at 95 MPH, was noticeably slower in the 3rd inning, coming in as low as 92 before settling around 93 to the final batter. After Jesus Sanchez got the third consecutive hit to open the 3rd, Braves pitching coach Rick Kranitz brought the trainer out with him for a mound visit and after a long discussion with Wright, Kranitz, and manager Brian Snitker, Wright left the game. He was replaced by Collin McHugh.
If Wright is forced to miss time, Atlanta should have some options in AAA Gwinnett they can call up to replace him. Dylan Dodd and Jared Shuster, who have both appeared in MLB games this season, could be called up for Wright's next turn through the order. Thanks to an off day next week before a short Tuesday-Wednesday homestand against Boston, Atlanta theoretically won't need a fifth starter until next Wednesday. With Dodd scheduled to start tomorrow for Gwinnett, he'd be the logical fill-in based on timing, but there's multiple options in Gwinnett, including Michael Soroka.
We'll pass along more updates as we get them.
UPDATE: The team has officially characterized the issue as "right shoulder soreness".
UPDATE 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO
David O'Brien, Braves writer for The Athletic, reports after postgame media availability that there will be an IL stint for Kyle Wright. Dylan Dodd will be called up from Gwinnett in a corresponding move, and will start tomorrow's series finale.
