THROWBACK: The historic opening to the 1982 season
It's finally Opening Day, and we all have high expectations for what the Atlanta Braves, fresh off a 101-win season and now with the addition of catcher Sean Murphy, can accomplish this season.
Back in 1982, the Braves set the standard for season-opening performances, starting with thirteen straight wins. Our friends at Braves on TBS have the video of that dramatic 13th win of the season, featuring Ernie Johnson
The 1982 Braves didn't lose their first game of the season until late April, dropping game 14 to the Cincinnati Reds. The 1982 team finished 89-73, winning the NL West and advancing all the way to the National League Championship Series, where they lost in three games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
It was a wonderful season for the Braves, with CF Dale Murphy hitting 36 homeruns and winning his first of two consecutive MVP awards. Phil Niekro led the team with 17 wins and 234.1 innings pitched, at age 43, and the team put up an ERA of only 3.82.
