Atlanta Braves non-tender a league-high seven players before Friday night deadline
The Atlanta Braves have finished making their non-tender decisions by declining to offer contracts to seven players, reducing the size of the 40-man roster to only thirty.
Per MLB Network's Mark Feinsand, of the 63 total players non-tendered across MLB, Atlanta had the most with seven.
Several of those players had more than $1M coming in arbitration, with Chirinos projected to make $2M, and both Allard and Tonkin making $1M. When you combine those savings with the now-traded Michael Soroka ($3M), Nicky Lopez ($3.9M), Kyle Wright ($1.4M), and Nick Anderson ($1.6M), the Braves have cleared over $14M in salary space for 2024 with these moves.
(The acquisition of Aaron Bummer from the Chicago White Sox adds $5.5M to the ledger, but you're still net $8.5M with the moves.)
Atlanta also cleared ten spots on the 40-man roster for free agent and trade acquisitions.
With both the funds released for reallocation and the roster space, all signs indicate towards the Atlanta Braves being significant players in free agency. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said earlier in the offseason that while the 2nd straight NLDS exit to the Philadelphia Phillies wasn't going to be the driver of Atlanta's entire offseason, it'd be taken into account as the Braves approached how to improve the lineup, bullpen, and starting rotation.
We're seeing the start of those efforts with the various moves last night and today to clear both salary and roster space.
