BREAKING: Atlanta Braves call up Michael Soroka for Friday night's start versus Miami
As expected, the Atlanta Braves called up Michael Soroka from AAA Gwinnett to take the ball tonight against the Miami Marlins.
For Soroka, it's his first start in Truist Park since August 3rd of 2020, some 1061 days ago, when he tore his right Achilles attempting to field a groundball in the third innings against the New York Mets. He wouldn't return to Major League action until 2023, suffering from a cleanup procedure on the initial repair, a 2nd tear of the same Achilles, and shoulder and hamstring issues during his rehab.
He was called up to the major league roster on May 29th for a road start against Oakland, going six innings with five hits and four runs. Soroka made one more big-league start, on June 4th against the Diamondbacks, before being sent back down to AAA Gwinnett for more polish on his secondary offerings.
The two starts in MLB did Soroka well, with him excelling once he got back to AAA Gwinnett. In his last three starts, he went 2-0 with only three earned runs allowed in nineteen innings, striking out eighteen and allowing only seven hits - opposing batters were hitting only .109 against Soroka in that three-game stretch.
This is the corresponding move to Wednesday's optioning of Jared Shuster back to AAA Gwinnett.
We'll be in Atlanta for Soroka's historic return to the mound and will have full coverage on Braves Today.
UPDATE: Continuing the roster moves, the Braves also brought Charlie Culberson back to Atlanta, sending third catcher Chadwick Tromp to Gwinnett. The Braves have been playing without a backup infielder since Sean Murphy's injury in the Colorado series, but haven't needed to play their backup infielder in over a month.
