Cardinals Electric Rookie Officially Makes History; What's Next For Young Outfielder?
The St. Louis Cardinals couldn't ask for much more out of outfielder Jordan Walker.
Walker is a rookie this season for the Cardinals but already has been making history left and right. The 20-year-old became the youngest player in over 40 years to make his debut with the Cardinals on Opening Day and has made the most of his opportunity and then some.
The St. Louis top prospect made history Wednesday night as he extended his current hit streak to 12 games and tied former Philadelphia Athletics outfielder Eddie Murphy for the longest hitting streak to begin a career. Murphy held the record alone for over 100 years before Walker tied the record Wednesday night.
Walker was drafted in the first round of the 2020 MLB June Amateur Draft and quickly developed into St. Louis' top prospect and the fourth-best prospect in all of baseball overall. The young outfielder showed potential to be a five-tool player at the minor league level and has quickly showed glimpses of his potential at the big league level.
The 20-year-old took over right field for the Cardinals heading into the 2023 campaign and should remain in the position for years to come. St. Louis has been fortunate with homegrown stars like Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina and while it's certainly too early to put Walker on that list, if he is able to live up to the hype surrounding him, he very well may. When the 2023 MLB season comes to a close it wouldn't be surprising at all if he were to take home the National League Rookie of the Year Award and maybe even more if he can continue to shine.
He's still very young so there's no way for sure to know how everything will pan out, but he certainly has star potential.
