Cardinals Reportedly Will Pursue Reunion With Rising Star This Offseason In Free Agency
Could there end up being a reunion at Busch Stadium in 2024?
It sounds like it is a possibility. The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to be one of the most active teams in baseball this offseason as the team looks to improve in free agency. St. Louis certainly has room for growth after winning just 71 games this season. The Cardinals will be looking to add at least three starting pitchers and one hurler the club reportedly will pursue is Texas Rangers starter Jordan Montgomery, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"Starter Jordan Montgomery’s stock has risen sharply with his stellar performance since joining the Rangers and should be in line for a fat payday with his former teams, the Cardinals and (New York Yankees) Yankees, expected to pursue him," Nightengale said. "Montgomery has been the Rangers’ best starting pitcher since after acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline, yielding a team-best 2.79 ERA and team-leading 67 2/3 innings."
Montgomery certainly would be a familiar face for Cardinals fans. St. Louis acquired the big lefty from the New York Yankees in 2022 and then traded him away this season ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline to the Rangers. Montgomery wasn't traded away because of a lack of success. He was a massive bright spot for the Cardinals ahead of the trade deadline but the club's overall struggles led it to be sellers at the deadline.
The big lefty would fit in perfectly in the Cardinals' 2024 rotation. St. Louis will look to add three hurlers and adding Montgomery along with someone like Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola, San Diego Padres star Blake Snell, or Orix Buffaloes youngster Yoshinobu Yamamoto would be the perfect place to start to compete next season. St. Louis has money to spend and a real need in the rotation. Bringing back Montgomery could be the perfect place to start.
