Could Reunion Be On Way For Cardinals? MLB Insider Links Club To Former St. Louis Star Hurler
The St. Louis Cardinals are going to look different next season but that doesn't mean there won't be a familiar face or two with the club.
St. Louis is going to be one of the most active clubs in the free agent starting pitching market. The Cardinals will need to fill at least three spots in the rotation and luckily for them, the free agent pitching market is extremely deep. One player who will be a free agent and reportedly could be a fit for St. Louis reportedly is former Cardinals and current Texas Rangers hurler Jordan Montgomery, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"Montgomery has quietly been one of the most consistent starters in the Majors since 2021, posting a 3.50 ERA in 88 starts for the (New York Yankees), Cardinals and Rangers," Feinsand said. "Texas’ acquisition of Max Scherzer garnered most of the headlines at the Trade Deadline, but Montgomery has excelled with the Rangers, going 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA in his first five starts since the trade. The left-hander turns 31 in December, but his velocity has improved in each of the past two seasons, as he’s averaging 93.3 mph with his sinker this year.
"Also of note: Montgomery can’t be given a qualifying offer after the season, so unlike Snell, Urías, and Nola, he won’t have any draft-pick compensation attached to him. Potential fits: Cardinals, Rangers, Yankees."
Montgomery was acquired by the Cardinals from the Yankees in 2022 and was traded from St. Louis to Texas ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. The big lefty has been lights out this season with a 3.19 ERA in 26 starts and could be a major lift for St. Louis. The Cardinals will need to fill out the rotation. Why not bring Montgomery back in?
