Ex-Cardinals Stud Reportedly Linked To Red Sox As Possible Offseason Pickup
One former member of the St. Louis Cardinals could end up making his way to the American League East in 2024.
This upcoming offseason is going to be extremely interesting as some effective starting pitchers likely will be on the move. It's going to be a very deep starting pitching market and one player who will be available is former Cardinals pitcher and current Texas Rangers lefty Jordan Montgomery. The Boston Red Sox likely will be extremely active in the pursuit of rotation help and Montgomery could be a target for the club, according to MassLive.com's Sean McAdam.
"From the left side, there’s Jordan Montgomery, who, over the last three years, has averaged 171 innings," McAdam said. "Signing two of those three — (Aaron Nola), (Lucas Giolito), and (Jordan Montgomery) — would give the Sox some certainty to the rotation. Add in (Brayan Bello), (Chris Sale), and one from the group of (Tanner Houck), (Garrett Whitlock), and (Kutter Crawford), and the Red Sox would have themselves a representative and deep rotation."
Montgomery joined the Cardinals during the 2022 campaign from the New York Yankees in a trade. The 30-year-old arguably was St. Louis' best pitcher but was dealt ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline to the Rangers. There have been some rumblings that Montgomery could return to the Cardinals this upcoming offseason, but Boston also makes sense as a possible fit. The big lefty has impressed this season and has compiled a 3.38 ERA across 30 outings with the Cardinals and Rangers.
The 30-year-old is the type of hurler who easily could find himself on at least one or two All-Star teams in the next few years. St. Louis may end up looking to bring Montgomery back but it sounds like he's going to have a big market.
