Ex-Tigers All-Star Could Be Solid Option To Help Bolster Cardinals' Starting Rotation
The St. Louis Cardinals already have added to the starting rotation in a major way but that doesn't mean more can't be done.
St. Louis landed Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson at the start of free agency and has been quiet ever since. The Cardinals surely still have more work to do and mainly have been linked to relievers.
While this is the case if the Cardinals could find another starter at the right price. There still are some very intriguing starters available. St. Louis certainly won't spend big and land one of the top starters available, but there still are some intriguing depth pieces left with upside.
One player who could make some sense for the Cardinals at the right price is former Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies starter Michael Lorenzen.
The 31-year-old has spent much of his career as a reliever but fully transitioned into a starting role in 2022 as a member of the Angels. Lorenzen joined the Tigers ahead of the 2023 campaign and earned his first All-Star nod before being dealt to the ahead of the trade deadline.
Lorenzen finished the season 2023 with a 4.18 ERA in 29 total appearances, including 25 starts, and now is a free agent again. The 31-year-old is projected to receive a contract with an annual value just north of $9 million, which St. Louis certainly could afford despite already landing three starters.
The Cardinals may not target any starter right away and likely will turn their focus to the bullpen. But, after they improve that area of the club maybe someone like Lorenzen could be an option.
