Ex-Yankees Fireballer Could Be Intriguing Pickup To Help Fix Cardinals' Starting Rotation
The St. Louis Cardinals already have made some intriguing additions this offseason but could more be on the way?
St. Louis entered the offseason hoping to add three starting pitchers after such a disastrous 2023 season. The Cardinals already have done that while landing Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn.
Although this is the case, there has been some speculation that the Cardinals may not be done adding. St. Louis may not add another expensive frontline starter, but it wouldn't be surprising to see it make another move for a cheap hurler with high upside.
One pitcher who could fit this description is former Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees fireballer Frankie Montas.
The 30-year-old is a free agent who won't cost much after missing most of the 2023 campaign but does have some upside. He has a 3.90 ERA in his eight-year big league career and logged an impressive 3.37 ERA in 32 starts in 2021.
Montas may not be the biggest name on the market, but landing someone like him on a prove-it, one-year deal could go a long way in improving the depth of the Cardinals' starting rotation.
St. Louis had one of the worst seasons in team history last year. One of the biggest reasons for the club's struggles was a lack of depth in the rotation. Injuries and inconsistent play hurt them out of the gate and they never were able to get back on track.
The Cardinals already have improved on paper but there still is work to be done.
