Yankees Reportedly Could Pursue Young Cardinals Outfielder; Could Move Happen?
The St. Louis Cardinals will have some difficult decisions to make this offseason.
St. Louis has some serious holes on its roster and also logjams at multiple positions. The Cardinals' biggest need without a doubt is in the starting rotation. St. Louis likely will add at least one hurler in free agency, but trades also could be an option, especially with the logjams.
One player that certainly is going to draw trade interest is young outfielder Dylan Carlson. The 24-year-old found his name in trade rumors seemingly all season but stuck around with St. Louis after the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. Carlson could find himself on the move this offseason and one club that could show interest is the New York Yankees, according to The Athletic's Brendan Kuty.
"The Cardinals' Dylan Carlson stands out as a potential trade candidate considering the Yankees' interest in him before the trade deadline," Kuty said.
Carlson has shown some flashes of brilliance at the big league level at points but could have solid value as a trade piece. St. Louis has Lars Nootbaar, Jordan Walker, Tyler O'Neill, Tommy Edman, and Carlson all on the roster. Carlson is just 24 years old, plays solid defense, and has shown offensive potential. If the Cardinals could deal him to a team like the Yankees and bring in a pitcher, a move could make perfect sense. Plus, a move could help clear up the outfield logjam.
The Cardinals likely will add hurlers in free agency, but trading someone like Carlson away also could help.
