The Chicago Cubs are hoping to snag a statement series victory when they face the San Diego Padres in a rubber match on Thursday at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs shutout the Padres on Tuesday evening before being dealt a 5-3 loss on Wednesday. San Diego scored their winning runs late off the bullpen after starter Drew Smyly held them to just two runs through 5.0 innings pitched.

Chicago has been impressing in the early goings and a series win against a very tough Padres squad would go a long way in helping boost confidence and legitimizing them as contenders.

Hayden Wesneski (1-1, 6.23 ERA) will take the bump for the Cubs as he hopes to right his ship after struggling to start the year. He will face San Diego's Seth Lugo (2-1, 2.78 ERA).

First pitch is at 1:20 p.m. CT.

Thursday's game will be televised in the local Chicago market on the Marquee Sports Network. It will also be streamed live on MLB.tv for those who reside outside the market.
