British Broadcasters Go Viral in Chicago Cubs Home Run Call

The Chicago Cubs blew out the St. Louis Cardinals, but the real show was in the British broadcast booth.

The Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals took their long-simmering rivalry across the Atlantic for the London Series on Saturday evening.

Taking an American game to another country comes with unique opportunities for people in that country to experience it. And that includes those that call the game.

Along with Fox, MLB Network and other American outlets that cross the Atlantic to broadcast the game, local British crews were on hand to call the game, too.

As the game went on, the Cubs asserted themselves in a blowout win over the Cardinals. Late in the game, one British announcer called Dansby Swanson’s opposite-field home run in the most British way possible.

Here’s the entire call:

“It’s a big hit by Swanson that’s going all the way back, is it going to get over the wall?! And it is! It’s into the bullpen. And that might be the exclamation point on a great Chicago Cubs victory here in London tonight. A long bomb from Dansby Swanson, a two-run homer, and the Cubs lead the Cardinals 9-1.”

Indeed, the long bomb was the exclamation point as the Cubs won, 9-1, and handed Justin Steele his eighth win of the year.

Sunday’s finale is set for 9 a.m. central.
