Chicago Cubs Acquire Third Baseman Candelario in Trade with Nationals
The Chicago Cubs have just completed a trade with the Washington Nationals for third baseman Jeimer Candelario according to multiple reports.
Candelario will now man third base for the Cubs as they look to push for a postseason spot this year.
In 2023, Candelario is slashing .258/.342/.481 with 16 home runs. He will take over the everyday third base role after Patrick Wisdom and Nick Madrigal could not take a firm grasp of the job.
Candelario is on a one-year, $5 million contract and will be a free agent at the end of this season. He is strictly a rental and Chicago will have no long-term commitment to him.
In exchange, the Cubs are sending shortstop prospect Kevin Made and left-handed pitcher DJ Herz back to the Nationals according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Made is viewed as the club's No. 14 prospect while Herz is the No. 16 prospect.
It's an interesting turn of events for the Cubs who just a week ago were viewed as sellers. Now they have a reliable everyday third baseman to help them navigate a stretch playoff push.
The front office is showing faith in the team they have assembled. Bullpen help could be next.
