Chicago Cubs slugger Cody Bellinger extended his hit streak to 10 games with a home run against the New York Mets on Tuesday night, as the Cubs won, 3-2.

Bellinger wasn’t the only Cub to homer on Tuesday. Mike Tauchman’s solo home run in the top of the eighth gave the Cubs (59-55) the lead for good.

With the win, the Cubs are now 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. If the season ended on Wednesday, the Cubs would get the final Wild Card spot by one percentage point over the Cincinnati Reds.

Bellinger’s home run came in the top of the fourth inning and cut the Mets’ lead at the time to 2-1. It was his 17th home run of the season and went 398 feet into the right field seats.

Bellinger last went without a hit on July 29 against St. Louis. Since then, he’s collected 17 hits in his last 10 games and put together a red-hot start to the month of August.

In eight August games Bellinger has slashed .500/.545/.767 with two home runs and 10 RBI.

With his 1-for-4 performance on Tuesday, Bellinger has pushed his season numbers to .331/.382/.557/.939 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI.

There was much speculation around Bellinger at the trade deadline as some outsiders believed the Cubs might deal him if they fell out of the playoff race. But, the Cubs surged after the All-Star Break and have now won six of their last 10 games to put themselves in the hunt for the playoffs.

Bellinger has had much to do with that, and it creates drama for the offseason, where Bellinger and the Cubs have a mutual $25 million option for 2024.
