Chicago Cubs Jump Multiple Spots in MLB Power Rankings After Strong Week
The Chicago Cubs jumped three spots in MLB.com's latest power rankings released Monday morning. They now sit at 15 on the list, dead middle, after a 4-3 week. That is a three spot jump from 18 which is where they sat last Monday.
A sweep of the Oakland Athletics in which they outscored their opponents 26-3 helped propel the jump.
Despite dropping the four-game weekend series to the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1, they still fought hard every day. Their 13-0 win on Friday when starter Drew Smyly was closing in on a perfect game was the most impressive game they have played all season.
While rankings don't mean much, especially this time of the year, it is encouraging to see the Cubs are ascending and trending upward in the eyes of many writers, it's a testament to their strong performance.
This week brings a series against a tough San Diego Padres squad at Wrigley Field and then an away series against the struggling Miami Marlins. Strong performances in those series would go a long way in further legitimatizing the Cubs as contenders.
