Chicago Cubs Land Electric Pitcher in Latest Mock Draft
More pitching help for the Chicago Cubs could be coming if Baseball America’s most recent mock draft is any indication.
Baseball America produced its third version of the mock about a month out from the MLB Draft, which is set for July 9-11 in Seattle during All-Star Weekend.
The Cubs have the No. 13 selection in the draft and with it the publication projects that they’ll take a left-handed pitcher, Thomas White, who plays for Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.
Per Baseball America:
White had plenty of attention with teams picking inside the top 10, but an erratic final start of the season could have him wind up somewhere in the middle of the first round instead of the top third. There are a number of teams who seem to be excited about White and the Cubs are one of them, though this range of the draft also has a number of interesting bats on the board.
MLB.com notes that White has a fastball that can hit 97 miles per hour, along with a curveball that runs in the upper 70s and a change-up that hits the low-80s.
White is also committed to Vanderbilt.
The Cubs already have several well-thought of pitching prospects in the organization, including No. 2 prospect Cade Horton, who is now at High Class-A South Bend. Left-hander Jordan Wicks is No. 4 and pitching for Double-A Tennessee.
Two other Top 10 prospects are No. 6 Ben Brown, a right-hander with Triple-A Iowa, and left-hander Jackson Ferris, who is No. 8 and pitches at Class-A Myrtle Beach.
