Chicago Cubs Star Mancini Shares Thoughts On Potential Addition of Britton
Since his arrival to the North Side, Chicago Cubs first baseman Trey Mancini has been the go to man when it comes to public relations for his clubhouse. His veteran presence, unparalleled leadership skills, and the unique ability to effectively communicate with the media for his team has made him the point man for his teammates.
When news broke that the Cubs could still be interested in adding another left-handed reliever in Zack Britton, Mancini jumped all over the idea according to The Athletic.
“He’d be a huge asset to whoever signs him,” Mancini said. “I hope it’s us. He’s somebody that I loved playing with. He’s somebody that I definitely looked up to when I got called up. I learned by the example that all those guys set. It was such a great group there at the time. They really taught me a lot. He was at the forefront of that.”
Mancini and Britton were teammates while with the Baltimore Orioles. With Britton being 35 years old, he was in a mentorship role with Mancini, much in the same role Mancini finds himself in now with the younger Chicago players.
Perhaps the Cubs can bring in Britton. While he is not the same pitcher he was even just a few years ago before undergoing Tommy John surgery, he too could help bolster the leadership in the clubhouse.
Players like Mancini and Britton are the type of players that championship-caliber teams need on their roster.
