Chicago Cubs Tuesday Notes: Wisdom, Suzuki, Injuries
After an active offseason in which the Chicago Cubs spent over $300 million to revamp their roster, a 1-3 start is now how they imagined to open up the 2023 MLB season.
It's been a perfect storm for the Cubs who, when they have a solid outing from their starter can't seem to get any offense going. And when they score plenty of runs in support, their starter (looking at you Drew Smyly) fails them on the mound.
But such is life and baseball.
In some good news, right fielder Seiya Suzuki seems to be progressing well. He played in Arizona on Monday in an intra-squad game. A few plate appearances and four innings in the field. He is progressing quickly and we could see him up at Wrigley on the "sooner" end of the timetable.
As we wrote about this morning, Patrick Wisdom was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of last night's game. He had X-Rays that came back negative and apparently it didn't factor into manager David Ross's decision to have him bunt in a key moment.
Ross has, once again, made questionable decisions to start this season, a criticism he has faced at nearly every turn during his tenure in Chicago. A 1-3 start is only making the noise louder. Is he a championship caliber manager?
Overall good news on the injury front. Not so much on the on-field product and performance front.
The Cubs will have a chance to get back to winning ways when they face the Cincinnati Reds in the second of a three game series on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. CT.
