Chicago Cubs Will Live or Die By Their Offensive Output This Season
It was bound to happen.
The Chicago Cubs located their missing offense in a 10-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
They avoided a sweep in the process and hopefully regained their confidence.
“Up and down the lineup, it felt like all the things we were waiting to happen offensively happened,” Cubs manager David Ross said.
Patrick Wisdom and Yan Gomes popped home runs and the rest of the lineup all contributed.
Before this game, the Cubs had been hitting a combined .182 over the previous two weeks.
“To end the homestand with a win like that, especially against the Cards, I think it’s big for us and our momentum and our morale,” Wisdom told reporters. “Even though we have a great clubhouse in there, it’s just nice to go out there on the field and score a bunch of runs.”
The Cubs scored at least 10 runs for the first time since April 21 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This lineup is built to score runs in bunches. But it doesn’t always happen.
Before the 10-run outburst, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer was asked about the scuffling offense.
“I think everyone down there knows it’s going to turn, but that doesn’t mean there’s not frustration about when it’s going to,” Hoyer said. “Probably the best way to say it is that I do take a lot of comfort in the underlying stuff. But ultimately, we’ve got to start scoring runs at the right times and we’ve got to start winning games.”
The Cubs listened on Wednesday. That was a start. The goal now is to keep it going.
