Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Jordan Wicks had a bumpy first outing in his Triple-A debut with the Iowa Cubs on Friday night.

On the road against Omaha, Wicks was unable to get out of the fifth inning, as he gave up five hits, two walks and three runs in 4.1 innings. He did strike out five hitters, as he threw 89 pitches, 56 of which were strikes.

The Cubs announced earlier in the week that they were calling Wicks up from Double-A Tennessee, where he was off to a great start for the Smokies.

There, he went 4-0 with a 3.39 ERA 13 games, striking out 69 in 58.1 innings pitched. He walked just 19 hitters.

Wicks is the No. 5 prospect in the Cubs’ organization per MLB.com and is one of two pitching prospects in the Top 5 at Triple-A, the other being Ben Brown.

Wicks was the Cubs’ first-round pick in 2021 after a tremendous career with Kansas State.

Wicks split last season between Tennessee and High Class-A South Bend, where he went a combined 4-6 with a 3.80 ERA, striking out 121 and walking 28.

He started his professional career in the summer of 2021, where he arrived at South Bend and had a 5.14 ERA in four starts and a 0-0 record. He threw just seven innings.
