An infielder who played a role in helping the Chicago Cubs reach the 2018 Wild Card playoff has retired.

Daniel Murphy, who is primarily known for his time with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, retired on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Angels announced. Murphy was with the Angels as he was making a comeback attempt in their minor-league system.

Murphy originally retired in 2021.

The Cubs acquired Murphy on Aug. 21, 2018, in a trade that sent second minor-league infielder Andruw Monasterio to the Washington Nationals.

Murphy played in 35 games for the Cubs down the stretch, slashing .297/.329/.471/.800 with six home runs and 13 RBI. The Cubs lost in the Wild Card playoff game to the Colorado Rockies.

He broke in with the New York Mets in 2008 and played 12 years in the Majors. He spent his first seven years in New York, followed by stints with Washington and Colorado.

He enjoyed his finest season in Washington in 2016, when he finished second in National League Most Valuable Player voting after batting .347/.390/.595/.985 with 25 home runs and 104 RBI. He led the National League with 47 doubles, and his slugging percentage and OPS also led the NL.

He led the NL again in 2017 with 43 doubles.

He made three All-Star game appearances — two with the National and one with the Mets. He also won Silver Sluggers in 2016 and 2017.

For his career he batted .296/.341/.455/.796 with 138 home runs and 735 RBI.
