Six Chicago Cubs Tabbed as Likely Trade Deadline Losses
If the Chicago Cubs go into sell mode at the trade deadline, their roster could draw a lot of interest.
The Athletic compiled a big board of the Top 100 players that are on the radars of front offices around the league with the trade deadline set for Aug. 1. They are not players that are on the market — at least not yet. But they’re players that general managers and player personnel directors are talking about, per the story.
Turns out the Cubs featured prominently, with a half-dozen players making the big board.
Naturally, pitcher Marcus Stroman made the list. He’s been a popular name on trade lists since the start of June. With eight wins and a league-leading 2.45 ERA, he could fit right in with a contender. Plus it would give the Cubs something in return for him, as he has a player option for 2024.
But he isn’t the only Cubs player worth keeping up with.
Cody Bellinger made the list. He’s had a bounce-back year at the plate, despite missing a month with a left knee contusion. This is what the Cubs were hoping for when he signed a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2024. His .255 average through 42 games proves he’s found his stroke again. His power numbers could approach last year’s 19 home runs and 68 RBI. Plus, he can play three positions.
If Stroman is too rich for a team looking for pitching help, left-hander Drew Smyly might be a cheaper option. He’s had a solid season (7-4, 3.38 ERA in 15 starts). The 34-year-old would be a good rental for a team looking for back-of-the-rotation depth.
Christopher Morel made the list, as the designated hitter/outfielder is putting together a solid second season in the Majors with a .280 average, 13 home runs and 29 RBI. He’s under team control until 2028, which is attractive to the Cubs — and to potential suitors. The Athletic does not believe the Cubs will deal him.
Two other players named might only bring a small return. Patrick Wisdom is on the injured list right now and only hitting .196. But he has position flex and, despite the average, has 14 home runs this season.
Catcher Yan Gomes could draw attention as a backup for his receiving skills behind the plate. He is batting .275 with seven home runs in 43 games.
These Cubs are on the radar. Only time will tell if the Cubs will be interested in moving them.
