Dodgers Extend Starting Pitcher Tyler Glasnow, Pushing Trade With Rays Through

Glasnow is here to stay!

The Dodgers trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Manuel Margot will now be completed. The deal was contingent on an extension with Glasnow, but the team agreed to a multi-year extension with the starter, pushing the trade through.

The two teams had agreed to a trade that sent Glasnow and Margot to Los Angeles for right-handed pitcher Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca.

ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan was the one to break the news of the extension.

The Dodgers now get the ace-level pitcher that they have been looking for all offseason. Glasnow was entering the final year of his contract, but now will be with LA for the foreseeable future.

Giving up a solid pitcher like Pepiot, who had multiple years of team control, for one year of Glasnow didn't make a lot of sense. But with the extension, this deal is looking like a win-win for both sides.

The big right-hander should provide the Dodgers with a solid rotation piece after being the ace of the Rays for the last few seasons. Many will point to his struggles in the postseason, but the Dodgers must believe that they can help him turn that around.

In 10 postseason appearances, Glasnow holds an ERA of 5.72. This includes two games against the Dodgers during the 2020 World Series, where he surrendered 10 runs in 9.1 innings of work.

The team is banking on a change of scenery for Glasnow to help him fully realize his potential. When healthy, he is one of the best pitchers in the game, but injuries have been a problem for him over the years.

He threw a career-high 120 innings last season for Tampa Bay, posting an ERA of 3.53. The Dodgers are hoping that his injury issues are behind him.

With Glasnow now in the mix, LA can look to others to continue improving the rotation. They are heavily going after Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but are also looking at different guys around the league.
