Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Impressed by Bobby Miller, Reveals Plan for Him Moving Forward
Dodgers rookie RHP Bobby Miller began his MLB career with a bang on Tuesday, showing off his skills on the mound and leading the team to an impressive 8-1 victory over the then-NL-best-Braves. The right-hander went five innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out five against the vaunted Braves lineup.
We knew that Miller threw with tons of velocity, consistently touching the high-90s and triple digits on his fastball. However, what stood out about his performance was his ability to pitch with great variety.
He threw six pitches that reached or surpassed the 100 mph mark, and his repertoire of secondary pitches kept the Braves' hitters guessing and off balance throughout the game.
Despite giving up a run in the first inning, Miller quickly regained his composure and settled in nicely for the rest of the game. His exceptional display on the field earned him high praise from his manager, Dave Roberts.
"He was really impressive. I thought he showed a lot of poise tonight. Did a great job of managing his emotions, adrenaline. He showed just enough attitude and a little edginess, and just competed," Roberts said of Miller. "For me, the biggest takeaway is, when it got a little hot, when he needed to make a pitch, he was able to not overthrow. I was also really impressed with how he held his velocity for 90 pitches. He was touching 100 (mph) at 90 pitches. Really impressive."
Roberts also confirmed that Miller would make at least one more start for the Dodgers in the upcoming turn, but wouldn't go beyond that. It's great news that we'll see him at least one more time, but I'm sure Dodger fans would love to see him get more starts after that, even when Julio Urias returns to the rotation.
For now, though, there's no need to get ahead of ourselves.
Miller's next start is scheduled for Monday, May 29, against the Washington Nationals, in what will be his Dodger Stadium debut.
